Most of the students who join a research program of study are often not fully explored to the directions they should take in order to choose a potential research area. Thus, you may notice them spending time readings different areas and at last ended up with no selection. There is one of many possibilities available for any one who is confused or not cleared with their research domain. If some one does not know what to do as a part of a research one must collate thoughts to find personal interest. Say for instance, if one is found of mobile computing but is not cleared with what type of research is done? A researcher can always consult with research supervisors, find some one who is engaged in a similar or related area or read relevant survey papers. In essence, survey papers are always a good option to gather initial information about an area of interest.
A doctoral candidate conducts initial literature survey to develop research interest regardless weather some one have a research interest or does not have a prior one. Some time a researcher starts doing literature survey to know more about a specific area and ended in a complete new area. On other side, researchers know well what they intend to do, such as a PhD student has chosen “MALARIA” as the main area and working on a specific septum as an area of specialization. A researcher may find through the same literature survey a new area not known or may decide to choose this as a sub domain within the main research domain.
The most challenging situation would be for those who have been given some thing to either improve or modify otherwise. Attention to detail or better to say fully focused reading is needed even from the start. On the other side researchers may find this stage a little light if they know general area and trying to dig out some thing to work on. Please do not wait to enter into the academic writing till obtaining some results or complete findings. Initial survey is a good start to make one self an academic writer. What one could do is to produce a summary after each reading and save it for the future use. In most of the cases, same summaries later on add up a good portion of a final thesis.
One other aspect of this practise is to develop a wider and better understanding of the chosen research area. Some time the area might not be fully explored and need necessary information to be acquired prior to proceeding any further. It is also recommended to have a flavour of some related areas then the chosen one. This information will be of great assistance during a course of study and in a viva-voce examination. Please give sufficient room in here and do not rush otherwise effort might go in vain. It is in view of this, developing a finer understanding of a selected topic could be a key of success in a research program of study.
An area of specialization is the sub or associated area a researcher selects as a part of research being conducted and is usually emerged from initial research surveys. It is extremely important to have a definite and concrete decision related to an area of specialization. It is not expected from some one to know in depth as to what else have already been proposed, however, a researcher must try to build at-least some understanding of the previous work. Thus, it is necessary to determine weather or not there is really a need to do further work in a potential area. This has always been seen as an important aspect of any research. Since, for some thing which is satisfactory otherwise, might not have a capacity of any further work. In other words, people might do not recognize modification to the existing structure of an area as fruit-full.
Please remember that a PhD is a combination of two components justification that there is a problem and a solution to the identified problem. Solution and existence of a problem are completely related with an area of specialization. With no doubt, you would not like to conduct research in an area which is DEAD or have no potential which can attract others to follow you.
Once sufficient information or BACKUPS are gathered to show at some point of a place, there is a need of some work to be done. The next stage is to highlight exactly why do you think so? Therefore, a researcher might need to aware of the area in general; challenges; and which one you think needs attention. It is good to have knowledge of some weaknesses within some previously well known schemes rather then extracting the same from the unknown ones. Please remember that same weaknesses could use to analyze proposed or developed solution i.e. how developed solution has addressed them. Moreover, it provides a good base in a viva-voce examination. Please do not forget to prepare for a longer term by making notes of any relevant points from the reported literature. These notes are useful when start drawing own thoughts. In addition, they add-up good knowledge space in a researcher mind and provide technical support which is needed especially whenever a research work is presented.
